News from the Board: Welcome back to another year at Stargate. It's a very exciting year as we welcome Stargate's first 9th grade class, along with many new families, to our gifted community. The Governance Board has continued to work throughout the summer with a focus on the continued expansion and new campus. "In case you missed it": The Board met this summer on June 17th and July 22nd for regular business meetings. In June the Board finalized Mr. Cochran's performance review; approved his contract as Executive Director; and approved the operations budget for the 2015-2016 school year. In July the Board swore in the elected Board members Jan Kulmann and Tina Donahue and appointed an Independent Board Member from the community, Christina McMillon; set Board officers, committee liaisons, meeting schedule, and election timeline for the 2015-2016 school year; approved the staff and parent handbooks, which included a new internet safety policy; and began the planning process for alignment of committee focus areas. Upcoming Board Meetings: The Board generally meets once per month for regular business meetings. The full meeting schedule for the 2015-2016 school year is posted on the bulletin board in front of the school and on the governance website. Meeting agendas are always posted on the governance website before the meeting and minutes from those meetings are posted as soon as they are approved. August 26th: Business Meeting at 6:30 PM at Stargate September 8-9: Meet the Board at Curriculum Night for a Stakeholders Presentation September 16th: Business Meeting at 6:30 PM at Stargate September 25th: Strategic Planning Session (details tbd) Stargate Governance 101: Why does Stargate have its own Governance Board? A charter school in Colorado is a public school operated by a group of parents, teachers and/or community members (represented by a Governance Board elected per its Bylaws) as a semi-autonomous school of choice within a school district, operating under a contract or "charter" contract between the members of the charter school community and the local board of education. If you have a question for the board, please send an email to governance@stargateschool.org. Fall Elections: The proposed changes to the Bylaws were not accepted because the minimum number of required votes was not achieved (specific results can be found on the election website). You'll get another opportunity to vote during the fall elections. The Board will be available to answer questions during Curriculum Night or you can send them to governance@stargateschool.org. Your voice is critical for this vote. There are a lot of opportunities to get involved with governance of the school. The Accountability Committee and the Recruiting Committee will have elections in September to fill several open seats. The Accountability Committee is made up of parents and staff who provide support to the Board through surveys of the community and reviewing the Unified Improvement Plan for submission to the District. The Recruiting Committee helps find volunteers for committees and the Board. These are great opportunities to get experience in committees at Stargate. Details on how to apply and when will be shared very soon. Keep your eye out on the governance website. ![]() |
