News from the Board:
Welcome back to another year at Stargate.  With our 20th anniversary right around the corner, and our continued efforts to make sure we are meeting the needs of our gifted kids, the Governance Board has continued to work throughout the summer.

"In case you missed it":  The Board met this summer on May 28th, June 18th and July 16th for regular business meetings.  In May, the Board received a summary of the school's accomplishments in the 2013-2014 school year, including student growth demonstrated from MAPS testing; reviewed and agreed with an anti-bullying program to be implemented in the 2014-2015 school year, including the "No Place for Hate" program and the Second Step Program; received an update from the Architect, Slaterpaull, that will be designing the new school campus; recognized the new chair of the finance committee, Matt Herzog, the new chair of the fundraising committee, Denise Vitt, and the new chair of the website committee, Lisa Griffin; accepted the school's Form 990; approved spending for mobile technology, including 51 laptops; approved the New Board Member Orientation Policy; completed a review of the Board self-assessment with the Accountability Committee; and began the end of year review of the Principal. In June the Board renewed Mr. Cochran's contract as Principal; reviewed and approved the parent and staff handbooks; approved the supplemental budget for the new school year; and approved the contract between Stargate and Adams 12 School District.  In July, the Board swore in our newest member, Kristen Kelly; set Board officers, committee liaisons, meeting schedule, and election timeline for the 2014-2015 school year; and approved an Administration Succession Planning Policy.

The latest meeting of the Board was held on August 20th where the Board reviewed and approved the Admissions policy for Kindergarten through 8th Grade (required annually); reviewed and approved staff salary increases; reviewed the 2014-2015 fundraising plan; approved the Principal's goals for new school year; signed the board handbook/agreements; and began the process of reviewing current Board policies.

Upcoming Board Meetings:
The Board generally meets once per month for regular business meetings on the 3rd Wednesday of each month.  The full meeting schedule for the 2014-2015 school year is posted on the bulletin board in front of the school and on the governance website.  Meeting agendas are always posted on the governance website before the meeting and minutes from those meetings are posted as soon as they are approved.

Stargate Governance 101:
Why does Stargate have its own Governance Board?  A charter school in Colorado is a public school operated by a group of parents, teachers and/or community members (represented by a Governance Board elected per its Bylaws) as a semi-autonomous school of choice within a school district, operating under a contract or "charter" contract between the members of the charter school community and the local board of education.
