News from the Board: "In case you missed it": April was a very busy month for the Board. Below you'll see summaries of their recent activity. On April 24th the Board participated in its annual Board Visit Day where they had the opportunity to see the mission in action in the classroom. They also got to observe a student council meeting to see governance at work at the student level. A BIG thank you from the Board to the staff for allowing us to see the school through your eyes. On April 22nd the Board and Committee Chairs met with consultant Tony Fontana to begin the effort of strategic planning for next year. The discussion focused on how governance needs to evolve to meet the needs of the growing school and to be more strategic during the expansion while continuing to keep our focus on the school's mission. A BIG thank you from the Board to the Committee Chairs for their participation in the training and discussion. The Board last met in a business session on April 15th where they reviewed the plan for the Spring election cycle, including approval of the ad hoc Election Committee charter and budget, reviewed the proposed changes to the Finance Committee charter, and reviewed the proposed KPIs to track additional financial metrics related to the expansion. On April 8th the Board presented the State of the School to the community. Thanks to those who attended to hear about the results of the Community Survey, an update on the school expansion, and a Q&A session on the proposed Bylaws changes. You can see the full presentation HERE. No, the governance responsibilities belong to the entire board as a whole. Each board member has an equal vote. No single member, including the President, can act independently from the Board. None of the proposed Bylaws changes will have any affect on the responsibilities or authorities of the Board. What did the Board do with feedback that was received from the community on the proposed Bylaws changes to the Accountability Committee? After careful consideration of community feedback on the proposed changes to the Stargate Bylaws, the Board has modified the proposed changes to keep the Accountability Committee as an elected committee. Elections will continue to be the avenue for members to be chosen by the community for this important function. Stargate Bylaws Revisions - Voting Opens May 11, 2015 Voting on the proposed Bylaws changes will begin on May 11th.
