News from the Board: "In case you missed it": April has been a very busy month for the Board. Below you'll see summaries of their recent activity. On April 24th the Board participated in its annual Board Visit Day where they had the opportunity to see the mission in action in the classroom. They also got to observe a student council meeting to see governance at work at the student level. A BIG thank you from the Board to the staff for allowing us to see the school through your eyes. On April 22nd the Board and Committee Chairs met with consultant Tony Fontana to begin the effort of strategic planning for next year. The discussion focused on how governance needs to evolve to meet the needs of the growing school and to be more strategic during the expansion while continuing to keep our focus on the school's mission. A BIG thank you from the Board to the Committee Chairs for their participation in the training and discussion. The Board last met in a business session on April 15th where they reviewed the plan for the Spring election cycle, including approval of the ad hoc Election Committee charter and budget, reviewed the proposed changes to the Finance Committee charter, and reviewed the proposed KPIs to track additional financial metrics related to the expansion. On April 8th the Board presented the State of the School to the community. Thanks to those who attended to hear about the results of the Community Survey, an update on the school expansion, and a Q&A session on the proposed Bylaws changes. You can see the full presentation HERE. Upcoming Board Meetings/Events: May 7th: Groundbreaking Ceremony at 4:00 PM at new campus location May 11th: Bylaws Townhall/Q&A at 5:30 at Stargate, Business Meeting at 6:30 PM at Stargate Stargate Governance 101: Will the changes proposed in the Bylaws change the responsibilities or authorities of the President or the other members of the Board? No, the governance responsibilities belong to the entire board as a whole. Each board member has an equal vote. No single member, including the President, can act independently from the Board. None of the proposed Bylaws changes will have any affect on the responsibilities or authorities of the Board. The school's Bylaws are a critical document for our school and each community member should be familiar with this document. The Board strongly encourages everyone to read both the redlined version and the clean version of the Bylaws. The Board has created a summary and FAQ sheet to help you understand what changes are being made and why each change is being proposed. You can find those documents on the forms and files governance webpage or by clicking HERE. If you have questions or concerns there are several productive ways to communicate with the Board:
Voting on the proposed Bylaws changes will begin on May 11th. The changes can only be made if 30% of the community participates in the vote and of those 30% at least 67% vote to approve the changes. So please, play an active role in the Stargate Community by getting informed, asking your questions and voting! Call for Participation - Governance Board Elections: The Stargate Governance Board of Directors will have two parent seats open for a 3-year term. Nomination are now closed.
